The plate of Septimius Severus

A plate carved out of white marble, whose upper left corner is damaged, was discovered in the ruins of an ancient temple located in the vicinity of old mines, at the west side of Prlinski vis.

Following the order of the minister of education of the Principality of Serbia, Janko Šafarik – the manager of the National Museum in Belgrade – visited Rudnik and its surroundings in August 1865. He described everything that drew his attention in his report: three meetings with Prince Mihailo and local government representatives, remarks about the beauty of the region, road conditions, different state of the place…

Šafarik started the first known archaeological diggings in Serbia in this very place – Rudnik, the place which contained the remains of the temple dedicated to Mother Earth (Terra Mater). According to his research, the found plate had a special place at the front part of the temple, which was destroyed in a fire. The inscription on the plate has seven rows and the translation is as follows: The Emperor, Caesar, Lucius, Septimius Severus, Persistent, Noble, renewed the ruined temple of Mother Earth, with the help of Casius Ligurinus, an imperial viceroy. Upon the request of Publius Fundanius Aetius and Publius Aedius Mucianus.

The inscription mentiones the names of two peasants, as well as the administrator of the region and the mine Kasija, who helped the renewal of the shrine. The renewal of the temple dates back to the first years of the rule of Septimius Severus (193-211), when he was passing this place two times, in 193 and 196 AD. After the restoration was done in the National Museum in Belgrade in 2009, the plate of Septimius Severus has become a part of the permanent exhibition of the Museum of Rudnik and Takovo Region.
