The Seal matrix of Prince Lazar

The Seal matrix, the inscription of which shows it belonged to Prince Lazar, was found during archaeological excavations in Rudnik in 2015. This unique item dates back to the time when Lazar ruled Rudnik. The title of a prince inscribed on the seal points out to the fact that it was made following the year 1378, when Prince Lazar was the ruler of Serbia, accepted by both his subordinates and Serbian church. It came to the country after the Battle of Kosovo, during Hungarian march on Serbia, which struck Rudnik region as well.

There is a coat of arms of Lazar Hrebeljanović, which consists of a helmet with a visor, bull horns and a luxurious veil, on the seal. Owing to its beauty, artistical design and the overall impression, it is marked as a pearl of Serbian medieval art. The seal was displayed in the SANU (Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts) Gallery on the occasion of the exhibition titled “Medieval Rudnik: archaeological explorations 2009-2015”, and in 2016 it was a part of an International Interactive exhibition titled “Kosovo and Metohija – ten steps” in Serbian Cultural Centre in Paris. Prince Lazar and the Battle of Kosovo take a very special place in the tradition of Serbian people, as they marked the future of the Serbian people starting from the Middle Ages up to the present day almost. The exhibits – which were provided by the Museum of Rudnik and Takovo Region as well as other cultural institutions in Serbia – brought closer Christian and Serbian heritage to the wide international public.
