“Šumska kuća” (A log-cabin) in Rudnik

A contractor Von Hermann – an Austrian born in Belgrade towards the end of the XIX century – built a private house (a villa) for himself and his family in Rudnik. As one of 1,300 corporals, he survived the Albanian Retreat in the First World War and was severely wounded in a fight. He built numerous residential and commercial facilities (among them, a car factory – present day Motor Industry in Rakovica) in Belgrade between the two wars.

In the 1930s, Villa “Danica” – as it was originally called – was built in Duga Njiva, which is two kilometres away from the town, towards Veliki and Mali Šturac, surrounded by the greenery of coniferous trees. Even though it was set on fire several times as well as robbed during wars, Hermann’s villa – as it was commonly called by the locals from Rudnik – was never demolished owing to its solid construction and strong stone walls. Hermann had a lot of credits and numerous war medals. Nevertheless, a lot of property was taken away from him in the process of nationalisation, including the villa in Rudnik among everything else. Due to both its comfort and location, local government of the National Board of Takovo District decided to start its repairs in 1953. After that, as an impressive facility, it hosted a lot of “affluent” guests. Nowadays, State Enterprise “Srbijašume” owns the house, which is used as an accommodation facility under the name “Šumska kuća”.
